Secret Spot page Development

I liked the idea of using letterpress blocks to arrange a title for this article and found a photo on the internet featuring the whole alphabet. I wanted to draw the viewer into this building with the mysterious image of the dark window where you get in.

Deciding on a Grid system for the Publication

Looking at Jambos' page next to Toms, I realised it looked a bit unprofessional and sloppy having the type in different widths and arrangements. I decided I desperately needed a grid system to bind the book together and keep things consistant. I settled on pt 11 Helvetica for the type and a two column grid with quite a large gutter on either side.

I really struggled to come up with a color scheme for this page and tested out a range of options. I made a triangular pattern and lowered the opacity right down on it.I really loved the effect it achieves of slightly changing the tone of the colour beneath it.

James Isles Double Page spread Development

I was really happy with my first page and it helped me get my momentum going for the project. I felt like using a standard vector typeface would be too much of a contrast to the hand drawn aesthetic of the illustration so I copied out the font by hand to give the edges a more organic feel.

I was really pleased with the final outcome and found that adding a old paper texture behind the imagery really boosted the look.

Skate Book Brief

My original idea was to create a magazine that revolved heavily around the theme of skateboarding but after numerous crits I decided to develop something that was closer to a collectable book. Eventually, the penny dropped that I should create a DVD booklet to accompany my selection of short skate edits which I had been working on in parallel to my college work. For this new approach, I will aim to produce a series of interviews featuring my illustrations of the skaters on the DVD and articles on some of the places within it.

Birdhouse Board

I was thinking about ways in which I could make an image 'change' or interact with the movement of the board. I thought about all the possible ways a board can move and the most obvious was of course the humble kickflip. Thinking about imagery I was immediately reminded of those bird in a cage paddle tricks you see in very cheap magic sets and christmas crackers. Of course, this idea requires both sides of the board to be decorated which raises the problem of one side classically requiring the application of black 'grip tape'. I figured the only way the concept could work is if both sides were the same colour  and so I set about painting both sides yellow.
