Photoshoot with Andy Coleman

While I was back home over Easter I took a trip to the new skate plaza in Stroud and hooked up with Skateboarder Andy Coleman to do a photoshoot for my magazine. It was a beautiful day and I got some good snaps.

The Shire Video

While I was back home over Easter I took the oppurtunity to film the locals for a new skate edit that could possibly feature as part of my skate book/magazine.

Continuing sketchbook work

Iv'e been looking at different approaches to creating portrait imagery and tried using paper craft like I did during the Guardian Brief. I think it works well but may be more effective if I raise each layer up from the next to create a slight shadow. Ive also examined drawing people like cartoons...

Photoshoot with Tom Jefferies

I went street skating and up Hydepark with Tom Jeffrey to shoot some photos for his article in my skate magazine.

Experimenting with cross-hatching

I've been experimenting in different ways of drawing portraits and discovered the cross-hatch. I think it creates a really nice rustic effect that does well to add depth to a face.

Hyde Park Photoshoot

I took a trip up Hyde Park and got some snaps of the locals. I made sure I got a few portrait pictures aswell that I will be able to draw from in my sketchbook.

Drawing skaters for the skateboard book.

I have been focusing on drawing portraits recently of skateboarders for my planned skateboard book/magazine. I have been developing this technique of building up the lines into different thicknesses and think that ts really effective.

Secret Spot Video

I've decided to pursue 'Skate Culture' as my theme and direction as I proceed forwards in this FMP. I've been skating myself for over ten years now and filming skateboarding has been an integral part of my love for the sport. I would say that learning filming and editing techniques within skateboarding has most certainly influenced my approach to moving image within my design practice. In my second year I focused heavily on video, producing both the SoundBombing and Wrinkley Runners briefs in this medium. This year I have made a real effort to focus more on illustration but with my decision to pursue skate culture as my theme for the FMP I see a real opportunity to combine the two mediums. As such, to accompany my illustrated book, I will produce a DVD of short skate edits.

This edit documents the process of searching out new skateable terrain within the urban landscape. I wanted to capture the feeling of mystery and intrigue as we entered the derelict building that was once Royal Park Primary School. My aim was to draw the viewer in as if they themselves were exploring this building and provide the context for which this makeshift skatepark had been built.

Photos of the final printouts

After a bit of research I discovered that The Guardian newspaper is printed in the 'Berliner' or 'midi' format and proceeded to print the final designs on watercolour paper to give a slightly rough texture.
